Super Natural Treasure (9 weeks)
Luke 12:34 - “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The word “RIDDLE” has been defined as:
“A puzzling question posed as a problem to be solved or guessed”; “Something twisted, bent, or tied in a knot.”; “Dark sayings”; “Hard questions”; “Sinister schemes”
Our present life, and even God’s revelation to us, contains riddles your youth will be engaged in a contest of intrigue where some of those riddles of life will be solved.
The Super Natural Treasure series, based on a popular movie, has been designed to challenge youth to use their thinking ability to solve a series of riddles and puzzles to discover the treasures which are buried within the Word of God. Each week they will unravel clues which they will collect to unveil the secret of the giant puzzle on the last week. Each puzzle, riddle, and game they face is designed to lead them to the lesson for the day. Super Natural Treasure was written for whole team competition which makes it especially suited for the summer when attendance can be sporadic.
The theme for this entire series is the treasure found in the Word of God. Each week a different treasure is highlighted. Some of the weekly themes are:
- Deceptive Treasures
- God’s Supply
- Spiritual Food
- Spiritual Works
- Faith
- Hope
- Love
The topics are some of the basics found in God’s Word which teens often overlook as not applicable to their current life. Super Natural Treasure makes the connection for teens from “ancient” Bible truths to their everyday life.
A real mix of games and puzzles are used in this series. Each session begins with the teams solving a riddle which sends the teens on a search for a hidden scroll. Each week each team must search for a scroll which has either a letter of the Hebrew alphabet or a number which corresponds to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet on it (the riddles for the scrolls will have to be customized for your church). These are collected throughout the series and are used to solve the giant puzzle on the last day. All of the games and challenges for the teams begin with instructions written in riddle form so they must solve the riddle in order to know how to proceed with the task. Some of our favorites from this series are:
Real Treasure – a penny search game
Key Search – a key search game
Toothpick Pyramid – a design construction game
Wooly, Wooly – modified from the version we played – so as not to get anyone else hurt!
Weave a Web – The absolute best game ever – equals the Value Meal challenge from the Soul Survivor Friendship Island series.
Teams compete on a point system with points being awarded for winning the games, finding the scroll, having the whole team present, Bibles, etc.
The final session in this series is a summary of the teaching which is revealed as the teens use the scrolls they have found over the previous few weeks and a decipher grid they find on the back of a copy of the Ten Commandments. This is by far the toughest puzzle they will face in the entire series, but really works well to bring the whole series of teaching together.
Again we suggest bringing the parents in to watch a video you make of the teens, serve refreshments and then play one or two of the games from the previous weeks. Let the parents team up with their own teen for this event and watch the fun.
